You Me At Six returned to The LCR, Norwich on the 8th of April for a smaller show on the ‘Night People‘ tour, named after their newly released, successful album. With support from Australian Rock band, Tonight Alive, and Rock and Depression Pop three piece, Black Foxxes, it was a night to remember. Each band individually brought something special; this would’ve been no surprise to those who’ve had the chance to see these bands before. All three have played in Norwich before, so for them, there were many familiar faces as well as new.
To open was Exeter’s Black Foxxes. Black Foxxes, who lay within a different genre, had a far different vibe than the other bands on the ‘Night People‘ tour; they weren’t as lively, they were just chilled. Instead of dancing, the crowd just listened, which, for an opening band, worked out okay. It was an interesting, risky choice to add a band like that to the lineup, but it seemed to be a hit; they were enjoyable in a different way. Sadly, some people had to miss some of their set, due to them starting before most people could enter the venue. However, I’m sure they picked up many new fans as well as wooing the old ones. The music couldn’t be faulted, and I would highly recommend for people to try and go to a show sometime or check out their music.
Next up were the main support, Tonight Alive, a band I was personally ecstatic to see. As the band entered the stage with their funky style and enthusiastic energy, it was clear that they were no stranger to this crowd. From beginning to end, fans were singing along and getting involved. Tonight Alive are very good with crowd interaction, so they were perfect for main support. They really take notice of their fans, and seem genuinely appreciative and pleased to be there. Their setlist, although very good, missed out a few that fans would’ve expected, like ‘Listening‘. I think people were shocked when they didn’t play it, being their most well-known song. The songs that they did decide on, were played with no faults. Each member played to the best of their ability, and it was a brilliant set; Jenna’s vocals sounded particularly strong. The last time they played in Norwich was at that same venue, 4 years ago. It was refreshing to see how much the band has grown. They have each matured and found the exact sound that makes them the best they can be. Their confidence has grown significantly, and they’re now in their element. During ‘Hell and Back‘, Vocalist Jenna McDougall stopped the song immediately as she spotted someone in the crowd having a seizure. She got them help with no hesitation, and the band didn’t begin the play again until they knew that they were safe and okay. This shows just how much they genuinely care about their fans! They played their new song ‘World Away‘, which the crowd seemed to know. I believe this band will go very far, and for anyone that hasn’t seen them before, this band are really worth watching.
As the lights went out, fans were screaming as they knew that English rock band, You Me At Six were about to grace the stage. The room lit up, with their fancy, bright flashing lights around the stage, and they started to play, ‘Night People’, the name of both their new album and the tour. The excitement and energy throughout the crowd was intense; fans were so ready for this set. It was a shock to see this band at The LCR on this tour, as they are playing some far larger venues in different cities. However, Norwich fans were very pleased about this. Fans of Norwich gathered as well as people who’d travelled from around the country. You Me At Six made it worth coming out.
Their set was a long one; it consisted of 19 songs. I would’ve thought this had been too long, but they surprised me. There wasn’t a dull moment. With their stage presence and the whole atmosphere of the gig, I could’ve watched them play all night, and I’m sure most of the crowd would agree. I always worry about how varied setlists are going to be when a band releases a new album, but there was no need to worry with You Me At Six. There was a range of songs from each album, which included the well-known songs and those less. They announced that they’ve been discussing a tenth anniversary tour for next year to celebrate ten years since first album, ‘Take Off Your Colours’. Fans seemed very excited about this, especially those who’ve been following from the beginning.
Just like Tonight Alive, You Me At Six seemed genuinely happy to be there. Vocalist Josh Franceschi made a speech about equality and acceptance. About not treating people differently because of the colour of their skin etc, and how you should treat people the way you want to be treated. I respect him a lot for this; awareness is very important. If you believe in something, say something. Later on in the set, Josh spotted a fight in the crowd. He spoke and handled the situation in the perfect manor. After the show the band took time to meet their fans. It’s always refreshing to see bands make an effort with those who’ve helped them get to where they are, and it made fans absolutely over the moon.
There are still a few dates left on this tour, if you don’t already have a ticket but you can make it to one of them, do it! You won’t regret it.
