Since forming in 2006 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk, Deaf Havana have continuously played shows throughout the UK and Europe to many excited fans. They joined us in the UEA LCR to start their 2014 tour, with support from American rock band, The Maine.
The UEA was overflowing with eager fans as The Maine took to the brightly lit stage. Their performance wasn’t off to the smoothest of starts; the first 10 minutes they were on stage was used as their sound check. However, the set quickly began, and all of this was soon forgotten as the band worked up the crowd and built up the overall energy in the room. Surrounded by fans of all ages, everybody was pushing for the stage, trying to get the best view of the band. All of the adults had drinks in hand, chanting and cheering the band on. It was a brilliant atmosphere, as the band played through their upbeat and buoyant set the crowd’s energy built further. The band did not disappoint those who had waited hours outside the doors to see the two main bands performing. Together, the energy, performance and overall atmosphere were better than expected. It left the crowd wanting more from the group and prepared them for the headliners of the tour, Deaf Havana.
The backdrop was changed, ready for the headliners. The crowd again began to push forward, squeezing into the smallest gaps in the centre of the venue, just to get a good view of the band. All of the fans who had queued for hours lined the barriers as the band entered the stage. The crowd roared with cheers and screams, it was apparent that the local band were hugely popular in the city of Norwich. Many other fans had also travelled from various parts of the country just to see the band perform. The lighting was hugely impressive. It played a big part in the bands performance and helped create a brilliant atmosphere. Letters spelling ‘DEAF HAVANA’ were clearly illuminated at the back of the stage, lighting up throughout their performance and giving a real sense of stardom on the stage. Just below the lights sat the drummer, Tom Ogden, on a raised platform, along with keyboard player, Max Britton. It was nice to see that all members were just as important as each other, and nobody was hidden behind the rest. The set was fantastic and for many was worth the long wait outside the doors. One memorable part of the evening was when guitarist, Matthew Veck-Gilodi climbed on top of the ridiculously high speakers and performed to a surprised and amazed crowd, keeping the performance exhilarating for the audience.
Overall, it was an enjoyable evening full of high energy and fantastic musical abilities, from both Deaf Havana and support, The Maine. As they continue to tour the UK, make sure you head out and see them perform!
