Interview: KingFast

Kingfast

Get to know Paul Walker, also known as KingFast. KingFast is a singer-songwriter based in Liverpool who combines soulful vocals with contemporary folk/pop guitar to create something wonderful.

What made you want to start music?

I’ve always been inspired watching performances and I’ve been through teenage years of loving so many different genres from The Darkness to Michael Jackson, to 50 Cent, to Bastille and many, many more obsessions. I’ve always wanted to perform music myself and in my own way so hopefully having all of these idols has made my music unique in some way and a fusion of genres. This is also something I’ve always wanted to do, create my own genre which turned out to be a lot easier as an idea than to even begin doing.

What drives you to be the best you can be?

Partially the very high standards I see at local gigs to mainstream gigs and partially my genuine love for music and performing and learning new tricks.

What are you currently up to musically?

I’m currently performing when I can and also writing lots of material, basically deciding whether to go forward with an EP or Album next. Watch this space. I released a music video on the 18th February for “The Feeling” which is from my debut EP (Dream World) and that is online. The video is pretty cool and I do some acting in it. Also without sounding too vague I may or may not be appearing with a live video recording for Liverpool Sound City or Liverpool’s Urbanista Magazine.

What bands did you listen to growing up?

I listened to all kinds of stuff including Iron Maiden and Metallica which surprises people. Michael Jackson has always been a huge influence on me, his tone, range, lyrics, basslines and just everything are all top notch. I listened to some soul and motown when my mum played it but generallly I was quite cheesy and listened to chart music like Blue and JLS! But as mentioned before, I went through phases including rock, metal, rap, cheesy pop and R&B (contemporary).

Who would you most like to work with in the future?

I think it would be really cool to feature on Kanye West song or sing with Beyonce even though most people are going to be outsung by her! I’d also like to do a tune with Ed Sheeran as he does somewhat inspire my style and reckon we could do something nice. I also love the vibe of Bipolar Sunshine and think a feature on his sound would sound nice.

Of all the songs in the world, what best describes each of your personalities?

Eminem – Lose Yourself – because I love spaghetti and getting lost in the music. Sorry, that was the best I could think of.

Where do you aim to be in the next few years?

Hopefully sky high! I hope to be in say 3 years time in the main festivals playing some sort of tent. As long as I have a nice fan base whether it be 30, 300 or 3,000 I will be happy.

Finally, your music is for fans of…

A mix of Damien Rice, Ed Sheeran, Stevie Wonder and Michael Kiwanuka. Sounds more disparate than it is!
